Faithful
Today we dropped Jake off for a few days of boarding at his favourite home away from home. It’s called The Pup Shop. It’s the same place that we take him for daycare and he is full of excitement whenever he knows he is going there. We are extremely happy with Cara and Sandy, who run the business, and they are real dog people. They have shown themselves to be faithful at looking after Jake and we do not worry when Jake is with them.
In our reading in 2 Thessalonians 3, the apostle Paul tells the Thessalonians, “the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one” (2 Thessalonians 3:3 NASB1995). He says this after he asks them to pray that Paul and those with him would be protected from “perverse and evil men.”
To keep what Paul is saying in context, we can say simply that God is faithful. I believe that if we put our faith in Jesus, God is faithful. I also believe He will strengthen and protect us from the evil one. However, this can be misinterpreted. We have seen throughout history how Christians have even been burned at the stake, and that does not seem like being protected. However, our protection does not necessarily mean protection from physical harm. If our faith and trust is in Jesus, we are secure in Him. When we need strength, He will provide it, and when our faith is tested by the evil one, God provides what we need to stand strong.
So, just like I have faith that The Pup Shop is going to look after Jake and protect him, this does not mean that nothing will go wrong with Jake. He could get ill, he could get injured playing with other dogs and there are many other bad things that could happen to Jake.
I believe God is faithful and will protect and strengthen me. That does not mean I won’t get into an accident or that some incident will not hurt me, but it does mean God is with me and will give me the strength to endure whatever happens. My trust in God isn't based on believing that nothing bad can happen to me. It is based on knowing Him. In His time, He will call me to Himself, and my destination is firm.
Have a great day!
Steve
