The Straight Path

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5,6).

A renowned Bible teacher I knew would often explain that a river cuts its own course.  I always liked that illustration of life because we are not ultimately in control of its direction. We may be moving along when suddenly illness, the loss of a job, or some other unexpected event changes everything.  Our river changes course.  Looking back, we can see that our lives have not followed a perfectly straight line.  Instead, the river flowed around each obstacle and continued moving forward.

The proverb above tells us to trust God rather than lean on our own understanding. It reminds us to acknowledge Him through both the calm stretches and the unexpected turns of life, and He will make our path straight.

I asked AI to create a simple graph to illustrate that idea.  Our lives have highs and lows.  We experience great highs and disappointments, good days and difficult ones.  Yet if we trust God and bring each day to Him, the overall direction of our lives remains steady.  Looking back, we can see that God has made our path straight.

This reminds me of the conversations Sylvia and I have with our financial planner whenever we happen to be in the Toronto area.  We are not aggressive investors, so when the markets experience a sharp downturn and we begin to feel uneasy, he often pulls up a graph of our investments.  It looks much like the illustration above.  There are noticeable rises and dips along the way, but the overall direction continues upward.

Life with God is often like that. Day by day, we experience unexpected turns, setbacks, and celebrations.  Yet when we acknowledge His presence, trust His wisdom instead of our own, and continue walking with Him, we can look back and see that He has been faithfully directing our steps all along.

God doesn't promise a life without twists and turns.  He promises that if we trust Him, He will guide us faithfully through them.  Looking back, we often discover that what felt like a winding path was, in His hands, leading to the destination He had prepared us for.

Have a great day!
