What is Truth?

“What is Truth?”  That’s Pilate’s response after Jesus states “For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth.  Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”

In this day and time, truth has become very subjective.  Now, the definition of truth is: the property of being in accord with fact or reality.  It encompasses the real facts about a situation.  It’s the quality of being honest and sincere, and accepting universal principles or truths.

I remember as a child, news was reported as facts of a situation.  As a family we were usually eating dinner at 6:30 PM when the news would be on the radio in our kitchen.  We didn’t listen to the radio much but when the news came on at 6:30, we were listening.  For those of my era, you may also remember your father talking back at the radio.  That was my father for sure!  At the time we lived near Toronto and the station we listened to for the news was CFRB 1010 but unique to this newscast, it was entitled “CFRB News at 6:30 with Gordon Sinclair and his comments.”  Because we would hear some opinions, they were clear that Gordon would add his own comments.  That was how news was regarded.  News was reporting on facts and if there were opinions added, they would acknowledge it.  Unfortunately today, you need to glean truth out of the news, especially if it’s political or based solely on someone’s opinion.   There are right and left leaning news outlets all claiming to speak the truth.  In my opinion, those who adhere to right leaning news will often refer to left leaning news as “fake news and vice versa.”  It’s unusual to find a news source that just speaks facts anymore.  Toronto has a newspaper, the National Post, that at least allows for both viewpoints.

As I look back, the church I grew up in, treated some of the biblical teaching as fact when it was actually a theological stance.  Adults would make statements to keep kids under control as well.  For example, “Don’t run in God’s house!”  That in fact was a lie.  If they had said the truth, “Don’t run in the church building, you may get hurt” would be true but not have quite as much impact.

If you are a Jesus follower, you know Jesus speaks Truth and that it is accepted by Jesus followers by both the right and left leaning believers.  There may be those who question that statement but it’s only through experience that you can realize it.  Jesus stated this to Pilate: “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then my servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”  Jesus can’t be more clear than that!  Anyone who tells you that “their” country is Christian,  speaks a false truth because the only true Christian kingdom is not of this world.  No matter what country you live in, you can be a part of God’s kingdom.  The kingdom of truth and light transcends all borders that man makes.

If you think I was doing well until the last paragraph but believe that to be lies, maybe consider being open to Jesus revealing Himself as truth.  This truth will set you free!

Have a great day!
