From Ants to Galaxies

As I am writing this morning, a steady, replenishing rain is falling outside. The ground, the flowers, and the farmers' crops are all being watered. Without water, we would physically die. God created this world with everything required to support life.

As I read Psalm 144, I was struck by verses 3 and 4:

"O LORD, what is man, that You take knowledge of him?
Or the son of man, that You think of him?
Man is like a mere breath;
His days are like a passing shadow."

I look at the universe and am amazed by the vastness of God's creation. Scientists continue to make new discoveries every day, and the universe itself continues to expand. NASA launched Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 in 1977, and today both spacecraft are still operating beyond our solar system, traveling at speeds of roughly 38,000 miles per hour. Yet in comparison to the universe, even our Milky Way galaxy is like a pebble on a beach.

Yesterday, while moving brush around the yard, a tiny black ant crawled onto my hand. As I watched that ant, I was again reminded of the vastness of God's creation. From a tiny ant to the unimaginable size of the universe, everything was created by God.

Though I have my own opinion, I'm not going to start the debate over whether God created the earth in six literal twenty-four-hour days or over a longer period of time symbolically described as six days. What I do believe is that God created everything; from the smallest ant or no-see-um fly to the furthest reaches of the universe.

When I consider the scale of creation, I understand why David wrote, "O LORD, what is man, that You take knowledge of him?" (Psalm 144:3) and "Man is like a mere breath" (Psalm 144:4). Yet David also declared, "Blessed be the LORD, my rock" (Psalm 144:1) and described God as "My lovingkindness and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield and He in whom I take refuge" (Psalm 144:2).

The amazing truth is that this great Creator cares about each and every one of us. He cared enough to send His Son so that we might live. John 3:16 says:  "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life."

That's my God.  He’s the Creator of everything, from the smallest insect to the largest galaxy. He loves us so much that He allowed His Son to die in our place and then defeated death so that we could live in relationship with Him forever.

I don't know about you, but that makes me feel pretty special.

Have a great day!

Steve
