The Truth that Sets You Free

“You are not yet 50 years old, and have You seen Abraham?” asked the Pharisees.  Jesus replies: “Before Abraham was born, IAM.”  This question and answer happened after Jesus had told the Jews that they were “of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father.”

Earlier in the portion of John we read today Jesus says to those who believed “If you continue in the word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free”

Jesus is revealing 2 options in this reading:

Option 1:  Your father is God!   You are set free.  You are set free from the bondage of slavery.  The Jews said, we’ve not been enslaved but then Jesus revealed the slavery is sin (missing the mark of God’s will).  I sin.  I sin everyday, though not always intentionally.  Sin is not necessarily what is considered wrongdoing or evil.  Sin is not fulfilling God’s plan every moment of every day.  As a human born with free will, it’s not possible for me to do this.  As a Jesus follower, I have freedom from sin because the whole slate of sin that I have committed - past - present - future - has been cleared forever.  The Truth has set me free!

Option 2:  Your father is the devil!  “You want to do the desires of your father.  He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him.  Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

Unfortunately, the devil has been very successful at lying, being the father of lies and all that.  In this day and age, everyone has their own variation of the truth.  Probably the easiest example to look at, is in the world of politics.  Truth has become whatever a leader has successfully made you believe.  Real news can be translated as “fake news” while lies being stated about a competitor will be considered truth if your political base will believe it.  The father of lies has successfully convinced many that truth is whatever people want to believe for their personal comfort.  It happens on social media extensively.  How many times do you read a post in social media that sounds believable and then are tempted to repost it because it sounds important only to find out that it’s just a lie.

As for me, I choose Option 1:  Jesus.  I will know the truth and that truth will set me free!  This Jesus is the same, who we are reading about in Psalm 110 today and who lives to intercede on our behalf and guides us with His Spirit.  “The LORD says to my Lord:  Sit at my right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”  Jesus, “I AM,” from John 8:58 will rule.  That’s my Jesus!

Have a great day!
