Blind by Choice
“One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” It didn’t matter what the blind man said, the Jewish leaders were determined to prove Jesus the ungodly one, even though the facts were right in front of their eyes.
Blindness! There is one thing to be blind because you have no choice but then there is blindness by choice. In Nova Scotia, vehicles are required to have an MVI (motor vehicle inspection) every 2 years and ours expired. I was blind to the fact the sticker was out of date but then when I noticed it, I was no longer blind. If we had not immediately acted on our inspection sticker, we would have been fined last evening. The car needed a lot of repair work done and we got the car back less than a week ago. The inspection sticker on the left lower corner of the windshield shows the last inspection date. As we were driving home last evening after visiting friends, we noticed a lot of police activity at the intersection of Highway 1 and Parker Mountain Road which we take to get to the north shore. There were probably 6 or 7 police cars. It turns out they were doing a spotcheck. In Ontario, spotchecks were generally used for detecting drinking and driving. This spotcheck may also have been detecting impaired drivers but the first thing they checked was my inspection sticker. I would have had a hefty fine if it were not up to date. If I had chosen to ignore it (stay blind by choice), we would have been fined.
That’s the thing about the religious leaders of Jesus day. They had the Messiah in front of them but because they chose blindness, they were unwilling to understand who Jesus was. The man who was born blind was healed in 2 ways. He was healed of his physical blindness but he was also healed of spiritual blindness. The blind man totally got it. As he was confronted by the Jewish leaders, he responded with “Well , here is an amazing thing: you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes. We know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.” and then the man states: “If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.”
The blind man's mind was so open that he saw what the trained Jewish leaders could not. He knew Jesus was from God. The Jewish leaders were determined that He wasn’t from God, no matter the evidence. Please don’t be like the Jewish leaders- open your eyes to Jesus.
Have a great day.
Steve
