Use it or Lose it

“By your own words, I will judge you.”  That is what was said when the nobleman in the Luke story responds to the servant who hid the money the nobleman had left him to do business with.  The servant said: “You are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow”.  With that the nobleman took the money from that servant and handed it to the servant who had multiplied his money tenfold.

I had a paper route when I was young.  As a young youth, I had saved up $1600 and that was a lot for the early 1970’s.  I loaned $1000 to a person that I trusted who was going to pay it back quickly but it was a year or two until all the money had been repaid.  Something happened when I loaned the money.  My habits changed and I saved no more.  Over the years since then, I’ve always been on the other side of that fence and have almost always carried some debt.  The only money that I’ve saved over the years, is money that was put away in RRSP contributions that have been matched by employers and taken out of my reach.  Thankfully, that money is safely managed by someone other than myself.

God has not given me a lot of money because God knows how I spend my money.  What God has given me is skills, abilities and an ability to visualize ideas.  My gifts are unique to me.  It’s my responsibility to use those talents and gifts to tell people about Jesus and invite them to trust Him.

Last Easter Sunday morning, we played hooky from our church and visited a church that is pastored by 3 young men who have a unique opportunity to impact their town.  Sylvia and I arrived at the church and as we walked up the steps into the sanctuary, one of the pastors was showing his wife the cues on the sound console because they did not have a sound technician.   After a quick hello, he asked if I could run sound.  I looked at his wife, then I looked at my wife, then I said to his wife, “I’ll do it unless you want to,” to which she quickly responded with “no, I’d rather you do it.”  Considering I have been given the talent of understanding sound and operating sound consoles, I need to use that talent when it is for furthering God’s kingdom.

The gifts that God gives us are to be used for serving others and for His glory.  When we use those gifts, God may expand them.

Have a great day!
