Peace in Uncertain Times
“Every man is stupid, devoid of knowledge!” The NIV translation says it much more eloquently; “Everyone is senseless and without knowledge” God’s words through Jeremiah are referring to idols made with hands. He starts by explaining the vastness of God “who made earth by power” and “established the world by His wisdom.” In comparison, “every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols,” “they are deceitful,” “there is no breath in them,” “they are worthless, a work of mockery.” In some places idols are worshiped. Some are literal idols that represent a god but sometimes it’s not a literal idol.
I’ve asked this before and I’ll ask it again. What takes prominence over God? These are your idols. Is it a relationship? Is it your house? Is it your car? Is it a political party or stand? Politics is a big one these days. For example, media personality Sean Hannity stated he is “no longer catholic” because of his support for Donald Trump.
In our Luke reading today, we read Jesus' words “See that you are not misled; for many will come in my name saying” “I am He” and the “time is near.” Jesus talks of “wars and disturbances” and “great earthquakes.” This morning alone, I read of a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Japan. We are aware of many wars going on right now around the world. These all point toward the end times but Jesus says, “do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end does not follow immediately.”
In my younger years, I tended to worry whenever I heard of wars. The day 9/11 was happening the first thing I thought of was; “Is this the end?” It was not a question of facts, it was a question of fear. As I’ve gotten a little older, maybe it’s maturity, I’ve quit worrying whenever I hear of wars breaking out, but I do look to God’s word to see if there is a hint of the current happening represented in scripture. It’s no longer out of fear, it’s out of expectation.
So what does one do when presented with all these world happenings? Well understand the most famous verse in the Bible, John 3:16; “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” God loves each and every one of us and we are instructed to believe in Jesus.
Be at peace in and about world events through Jesus.
Have a great day
Steve
