Holding Salvation
I’m just focusing on the words spoken by Simeon in Luke 2;30-32. Simeon, in 3 verses, spoke of Jesus' purpose on earth. Simeon was an old man but he was “righteous and devout,” a Godly man who had been allowed to live until he could see Jesus. The Holy Spirit was not in every Godly person because Jesus had not done His work on Earth yet. I’ve skipped a lot of details and theology here but very simply, before Jesus was taken through His ascension to heaven, the Holy Spirit was around but not all people had access to the Spirit living in them; in this age, the Holy Spirit is present in everyone who has made the decision to be a Jesus follower. If my brother reads this, maybe he will give a theological explanation in the comments. I guess we’ll wait and see.
Simeon had been brought to the temple by the Holy Spirit. Simeon picks baby Jesus up in his arms and says, after telling God He can take him home now, “For my eyes have seen Your salvation.” He has seen Jesus, God’s son, “I AM”. Simeon knew that Jesus was the turning point in time. He also said Jesus was “A light of revelation to the gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel”. Simeon knew that Jesus would bring salvation to everyone, not just the Jews.
For a moment, put yourselves in Simeon’s shoes. Imagine holding God in human form in your arms and knowing it. He was holding the Saviour of the world in his arms. What an incredible realization that would be!
Now from my perspective, I am a gentile (a name describing everyone who is not a Jew)! This very Jesus that Simeon was holding is the same Jesus who is alive today and desires every person in this world to be in a relationship with Him. Just a few days back we read Mark’s first hand experience of Jesus' death and resurrection. He’s calling each and everyone of us to personally know Him. I have taken Him up on his offer.
No personal story today, just His story. You can accept HISstory today. If one person takes Him up on His offer through my blog this year, then all time and effort will be worth it. If you have chosen to do this, please let me know. I’d like to pray for you. My email is below.
Have a great Day
Steve
