Bad News Today!
David seems to write his best songs when his enemies are chasing him (and Syl adds: …and he didn’t even have voice-to-text as he was running!). In fact, very few of the Psalms written by David are purely positive. For many Jesus followers, the book of Psalms is one of their favorites. I suppose it's because they find David’s Psalms speak aloud, some of their own negative feelings at times. However, most of David’s Psalms also finish off with Godly praise. Psalm 70:4 Says “Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; and let those who love Your salvation say continually, “Let God be magnified.”” David gives us the right perspective in his writing because most of what we hear everywhere is negative.
The other day I mentioned that I check the news when I go to bed and when I get up. It’s always negative news. Google has become my friend in research. Today Google is telling me that “Bad news has a significantly higher likelihood of being read compared to good news, a phenomenon driven by a psychological tendency known as negative bias.” It also says “A “good news day” can result in a significant decrease in readership - sometimes up to 66% - compared to a “bad news day.”” I feel like we must be some kind of sick society! However, maybe that’s the reason why Jesus followers like David’s Psalms.
What I crave today is positive news. Unfortunately, I’m guessing I need 3 times the number of good news stories to compensate for the bad news stories. So here we go:
One Bad news paragraph!
In the world today, there are wars all over the place. It’s causing the cost of living to rise to a snapping point for many; oil is becoming more costly and the price of food is absolutely crazy. Right now, I kind of wish I had an electric car because even Nova Scotia Power’s overpriced supply is sounding more reasonable than driving a gas powered vehicle. Life is getting harder, not easier!!
Three Good news paragraphs!!!
In our reading, we are almost finished with Leviticus. That is good news (for me anyways)! I have always found reading about the Hebrew law to be extremely difficult. Like students who ask in high school, ‘When will I ever need trigonometry in real life?’ I’m not sure when I’ll need to know all these laws, since Jesus has already fulfilled them.
In Isaiah 60 we read about God’s coming kingdom on earth. I touched on it yesterday but now in verses 18-20 we read "Violence will not be heard again in your land, nor devastation or destruction within your borders; but you will call your walls salvation, and your gates praise. No longer will you have the sun for light by day nor for brightness will the moon give you light; but you will have the LORD for an everlasting light, and your God for your glory. Your sun will no longer set, Nor will your moon wane; For you will have the Lord for an everlasting light.” Hey for those who love sunsets…..I suspect the spectacular view you will see will be far greater than a boring earthly sunset!
We are all welcome in the kingdom. None of us is perfect. That’s “Good News!” In Luke 5:31, Jesus says, “It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” Jesus came for the imperfect! That’s me!!!
So what does Jesus want in return? Everything! To follow Jesus is to change your direction; decide to trust Him with all your needs, desires, and brokenness. Believe what He says. Allow Him to guide you to living your very best life (in other words, make Him LORD of your life). You will be amazed at the difference because He will put a “new song in my(your) mouth, a song of praise to our God (Psalm 40:3)”
Have a great day!
Steve
