Exodus 6,7
Isaiah 31
Matthew 25:1-30
Unlikely, Yet Chosen
This morning I am pondering why God chose to use Moses to lead God’s people out of slavery.
Moses grew up in the house of Pharaoh. He murdered someone. He ran away for fear of being caught. He got married and had kids. He was shepherding a flock of sheep and goats. He was not elegant in speech. Then God spoke to him from a burning bush commanding him to deliver His people from slavery.
Moses didn’t want God to choose him. God told Moses, “I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name, LORD, I did not make Myself known to them.” This was after He also told Moses His name was “I AM”. Think about that. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob only knew it was God that was talking to them, but God said to Moses His name is “I AM” and “LORD (YHWH/Yahweh).” Moses was the first of Abraham’s offspring to know God by personal names “I AM WHO I AM” and “Yahweh.”
In Matthew 25:29, Jesus says “For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance...” God used what he gave to Moses for a greater purpose and provided the help Moses needed to fulfill it by: the staff of God and his brother Aaron who was a more eloquent speaker. Moses also had a relationship with Pharaoh and the people of Egypt so it wasn’t a stranger arriving in their midst to deliver them.
At this years’ 2026 Grammy’s, Jelly Roll received the Grammy for Best Contemporary Country Album. If you’ve heard his music you’d recognize his raw heart in it and his message. He was very broken before he met Jesus. He spoke about a time when he was so broken that all he had in a jail cell was “a bible this big (I didn’ t see how big 🙂) and a radio.” He said “God had the power to change my life.” Just like Moses, Jelly Roll was, and is still being used by God. I suspect when he sat in that jail cell, he felt he had nothing to contribute.
Here’s my comparison. I grew up in the house of “Pauls.” It was a “Jesus following” family that gave me a basis for faith. However, at best, I was a “C” student in school but became an “A” student in math and shop. I was lousy in English. My first job was in a lumber yard. (It’s interesting that my last job will probably be in a lumber yard). Through most of my career, I was a show technician both in the church world and in the corporate show world. For 5 years, I was a facility manager. (As an aside, I’m also pretty good at renovating with my wife - I hope so after 6 complete renovations and working on the 7th). I did write one article for a church newsletter. I suppose that makes me a published writer!
I know Jesus personally. Only He could take what I said in the previous paragraph and turn it into anything beyond a weekly paycheck. I think that’s awesome, don’t you? God stuck all of that stuff together with bubblegum and has given me opportunities to represent Him.
Yesterday, I told you a little about the youth ministries God gave Sylvia and I to run for a few years. Impacting teenagers is a pretty important task for a couple of average people seemingly approaching "seniorhood!" God has used me in a number of areas in the past, but He’s also currently using me to write this blog. You see, God can give you opportunities beyond what you can comprehend, if you are willing to let Him guide your path. I never imagined that people would read my writing. If you’ve read this far, you’re proving me wrong! Thanks!
Have a great day today!
