Soul over Success

I have at times dreamed of being excessively wealthy.  I have also occasionally dreamed of holding a powerful political office.  With wealth and power, I could do so much good.  Imagine how extreme wealth could maybe eliminate homelessness, or high political office could do so much good for others by ensuring people are treated with equality.

All of this dreaming of doing good is easily tainted.  With excessive wealth comes the risk of using it for my own gain.  Political power comes with the risk of using it for the wrong purposes.  It starts with small things.  Rather than driving the Toyota that I need, I’d maybe drive the Lexus that I want.  It’s not a big deal because I have the wealth to carry it.  My 2 bedroom house is a little small for the people that we’d need to entertain, so maybe we need a larger house.  To keep the staff required to maintain my wealth, I’d need an office, or maybe put an office addition on the house.  To look after my role as a powerful politician, I’d need to appease the wealthy as well so as to stay in office.  I wouldn’t go too overboard but I would ensure the business people are happy with me so I’d be sure to provide some really good tax incentives for the wealthy.  You see, if the wealthy are happy, they can also contribute to the good that I’m aiming for.  Because of all these important things I am responsible for, my wife may not be very happy that I’m seldom home but I’ll make sure she has no worries, and a Lexus, so she can spend more time with her friends.  I know we have a dog but he’ll be at doggy daycare every day to hang out with his doggy friends.

Eventually, I will gain favour throughout the world and I can have everything I want.  The 10% of my fortune that I use on my homeless elimination goals would look after many of the homeless and people would say what great things I am doing.  I’d be able to move towards equality for most as long as it doesn’t make the wealthy feel less important and powerful.  I have successfully turned my marriage and life into an empty shell and I certainly would not have time to spend with Jesus every day like I am now.

Jesus says in Mark 8:36 “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?”  If my dream to become wealthy and powerful becomes reality, I run the risk of falling into the trap of needing more and more and not accomplishing my original stated hopes -  but hey, I have gained the world.

Without wealth and power, I may not be able to help all people in need, but we can provide, in Jesus name,  Tim Hortons cards for those who are housing challenged who need a welcome cuppa java.  We can offer our home for hospitality opportunities, provisions we may have for those in need, encouraging conversations for those who need someone who cares. Hopefully through what we have been given by God, both tangible and intangible, we may be able to show the love and care of Jesus for others..  Maybe it could be an introduction to others to Jesus for the first time.  This is an example of “setting your mind on God’s interests (Mark 8:33).”

Thankfully, some of the world's rich, such as Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, are turning their riches into philanthropy or are leaving most of their wealth to philanthropic causes.  That is an honourable use of riches; however, even for them, if they do not turn their eyes to the one who will give them an eternal home, it’s all for naught.  At least they are doing good in their earthly life.

Have a great day!

Steve
