Love Fulfills Law

My comments today are focusing more on the Exodus and the Psalm readings.

God told Moses to prepare the people to approach the mountain but not go near or touch it.  So, when they heard God, they “trembled and stood at a distance.”  They were terrified!  God spoke the 10 commandments.  This was just a start of the 613 rules and regulations that Moses would be given for the Israelites.  We read a while ago in the sermon on the mount that Jesus said He came to fulfill the law.  A Bible teacher from one of the churches I worked at, described Jesus fulfilling the law by changing the “shall not” to “will not,” changing the commandments to promises!

I am the Lord your God, you will have no other gods before you

You will not make for yourself an idol

You will not take the name of the Lord your God in vain

You will remember the Sabbath and keep it holy

Honour your father and your mother

You will not murder

You will not commit adultery

You will not steal

You will not bear false witness against your neighbour

You will not covet your neighbour’s…

As a child, we had a lot of rules that were based on the old testament.  The church I grew up in was more open minded than most, yet some of these 613 laws came through loud and clear.  Capital punishment was big in that church as an example.  We also had Anita Bryant, an anti-gay-activist, speak in the church.  My family had a serious car accident that afternoon so I missed the evening service where our pastor was smacked in the face with a pie by a gay rights activist.  Very simply, we were more “Shall not,” than “Will not.”  And with the “Shall not’s” we didn’t do a lot of “loving our neighbours”.

In Psalms reading today, I think the true mindset of the promises is shown in David’s response to God’s deliverance:.

“I waited patiently for the LORD;

And He inclined to me and heard my cry.

He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay.

And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm

He put a new song in my mouth,

A song of praise to our God”

Pulling some of today’s reading together, it’s wise to fear God.  I mean He is the great “I AM.”  The Ten Commandments really fits into the two commandments Jesus stated..  You may have heard these before:  Love God with all your mind, heart and soul and strength, and love your neighbour as yourself.

And Last but not least, God Loves you! What He asks you to do, He enables you to do!

Have a Great Day!

Steve
