Day 8 - Week 2, Day 1

Today's Reading

Genesis 14, 15
Psalms 8
Isaiah 6
Matthew 6:25-7:14

So much to talk about today.  So much to learn about.

  • In Genesis 14 and 15  God blesses Abram through Melchizedek (if you've never researched it, do a google search on Melchizedek), and then he promises to make Abram a great nation.  God makes a number of promises to Abram including the 400 years in Egypt as slaves.  Abrams and Sarai had not had children.  However, remember our talk about God being more interested in our hearts because the action follows the heart?  Well here we see in Genesis 15:6 that it was Abram's faith that was recognized as righteousness.  Abram "believed in the LORD; and He (GOD) reckoned it as righteousness."
  • I woke up this AM to a lot of snow.  One of the largest snowfalls since we moved to Nova Scotia.  The beauty and majesty is overwhelming.  I'm not driving so I'd maybe feel different if I were out there.  However, in Psalm 8, the writer, King David, says "O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Your name in all the earth!"  If you are following this blog, maybe pause for a moment, re-read Psalm 8 and meditate on God's majesty
  • There's lots in the Isaiah reading but I'm drawn to how we recognize our shortcomings when we are confronted with God.  This is an amazing recognition of Isaiah.

"Woe is me, for I am ruined!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I live among a people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts"
  • I woke up at midnight this morning and I had anxiety.  I'm not really sure what the cause was but it was anxiety and here I am reading in Matthew 6 about anxiety.  Now of course, I'm not talking about the anxiety that requires medication to control.  I am however talking about those times when we worry.  Jesus explains about worrying about your needs.  Jesus says don't worry, look at the birds who have nothing yet they get fed, the lilies of the field are beautiful because of God.  So don't worry about food or clothing, God will look after it.  My aunt who is 91 right now, has Matthew 6:33 as part of her email address.  I thought, how cool, it's her life theme.  "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you"  What is Jesus saying?  vs 34.  "Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will care for itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own"

  • So much to read about in Matthew 7, the golden rule, "treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this IS the law and the prophets!!!" Let that sink in!

  • Matthew 7:13 and 14 talk about which gate to travel in life.  I've chosen the narrow gate, the choice is up to you.  Not always popular but it is the best way!
