Isaiah Saw It

In 2004, Mel Gibson directed and co-produced “The Passion of the Christ” movie.  The leadership of the church I was employed by, was invited to a pre-screening before its release and Sylvia and I were invited to join them.  It was intended to be a nice time out for those attending and a restaurant lunch would follow to make it an enjoyable experience.  If you saw the movie, you will understand why the lunch was very quiet and nobody was really ordering much.  The movie impacted us in such a way that the reality of what was depicted helped us to understand the pain Jesus suffered at his death.  In the opening scene, the first thing you see on screen are the words “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5)

Today we read Isaiah 53.  Isaiah 53 was written 500-700 years before the crucifixion.  Much of the prophecy from Isaiah 53 is completed as we are reading in Mark 15 of Jesus' crucifixion.  Different aspects of the death of Jesus are written in all 4 of the gospels (first 4 books of the New Testament).

A skeptic could say that through His actions, Jesus caused the crucifixion to happen as  prophesied.  Jesus did know the prophecy, but I can’t imagine any human being in their right mind, intentionally directing their own death let alone moving it in the way it was prophesied hundreds of years before.  Just yesterday we read Jesus asking God, the Father, “Abba! Father!  All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.”

In Mark 15:39 we read “When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last breath, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God.””  Someone who was there to make sure Jesus died, recognized Him as the Son of God”

I have no intention of proving that Jesus was in fact the Son of God.  If you, the reader, are skeptical and believe it to be false, I’m not going to be able to convince you.  However, if you are authentically open to the possibility that Jesus truly is the Son of God, I challenge you to  ask Him to reveal that truth to you.  If you are truly listening with your heart as well as your mind, you will recognize this to be true.

As David writes in Psalm 62, “My soul waits in silence for God only; From Him is my salvation.  He only, is my rock and my salvation.”  Remember Jesus' words from several weeks ago?  “Before Abraham was, I AM.”  I AM is calling you today.

Have a great Day

Steve
