Blind Step, Sure Ground

Today, I am clinging to Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.”  I’m also thankful in verse 11 to read, The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Last night I slept poorly.  It’s the 3rd night in a row that I didn’t sleep well.  This time, my brain was continually active and I was anxious.  I’ve mentioned in the last few posts that our dog is recovering from a tumour removal and because of this, he has to be kept quiet, wear a cone on his head and one of us needs to keep watch on him at all times to ensure he doesn’t pull his stitches.  Believe it or not, he can flex far enough to be able to access the stitches while wearing a cone.  Sure enough, he was trying to play on his morning walk and it appears he's pulled out one of his stitches.  So back to the vet we go!

Our very present trouble now is the issues with Jake.  I’m thankful that God is our refuge and strength but sometimes it doesn’t feel like it.  In those times, I go back to times when I did feel it and recognize He is there even when I don’t feel it.  That’s where faith comes in.  Faith, from google, is described as “a strong, often unshakable belief or complete trust in someone or something, frequently held without absolute proof or evidence.”  There’s the thing, I can’t give literal proof but I can remember those times when God has proved to me that He is present.

Each one of us must experience it personally.  Once you have experienced it, you have proof.  It just takes that first blind step of faith.

In our Mark reading, we read how Jesus went to His hometown, Nazareth, and how people were busy looking at what family He came from and belittling who He was that they did not see “I AM” in their presence.  Jesus recognizes from Chapter 6:4 that “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household.”  Verse 5 tells us “He could do no miracle there” except for “healing a few sick people.”  I wonder what miracle He would have done if He was minimizing the healing of “a few sick people?”

The point is “He wondered at their unbelief.”  That’s what I am talking about.  It takes that first step of faith.  The people of Nazareth were so blinded by whose son He was and what family He was a part of.  I suspect they would have considered Jesus an illegitimate child considering He was born out of wedlock.

I think there are a couple of lessons here:

  1. Take that one step of blind faith.  I believe you will not regret it.

  2. Sometimes we judge a person by where they come from and what family they are a part of.  When we do that, we minimize the potential of who that person is, or may be.

Imagine what would have happened in Nazareth if they had not minimized Jesus because of His family background.

Have a great day,

Steve
